Digging in the high desert means digging through what the volcanoes left behind. Much of Bend and Redmond sits on shallow basalt and lava rock with only a thin layer of soil above it, while other areas are pumice and sand that drain fast and will not hold a cut. The same lot can change from one to the other in fifty feet. We walk every site before we quote it, plan for rock where it is likely, and bring equipment sized for the job so a hard dig does not turn into a change order.
Frost matters too. Footings, water lines, and septic components all have to be set below frost depth, and a grade that drains well in July has to shed snowmelt in March. We build those conditions into every excavation plan rather than fixing them after the fact.

Locates and Permits
We call in utility locates through Oregon 811 and line up any grading, septic, or right-of-way permits the work requires before equipment arrives.
Clearing and Rough Grade
Brush, stumps, and debris come off, topsoil is stripped and stockpiled where it can be reused, and the site is cut to rough grade.
Excavation and Trenching
Foundations, utility trenches, septic systems, and drainage are dug to the depths and tolerances the plans call for, with inspections scheduled as required.
Backfill and Compaction
Trenches and foundation walls are backfilled in lifts and compacted so nothing settles under your slab, driveway, or patio later.
Final Grade and Handoff

How much does excavation cost in Central Oregon?
It depends on the scope, how much rock we hit, site access, and how much material has to be hauled off or brought in. A simple pad on friendly soil costs far less than a full foundation dig through basalt. We walk the site, review your plans, and give you a written quote before any equipment moves, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
Do I need a permit for excavation or grading?
Often the building permit for your project covers the related excavation. Septic systems, work in the public right-of-way, and larger grading or fill projects need their own permits, and jurisdictions in Central Oregon also enforce erosion-control rules on disturbed ground. We tell you what applies to your site and handle the paperwork as part of the job.
What happens if you hit rock?
In Bend, Redmond, and most of the high desert, we expect to. Shallow basalt and lava rock are normal here, so we plan for it when we quote and bring equipment that can rip or hammer through it. If conditions turn out worse than the site walk suggested, we talk with you before the approach or the price changes.
Can you excavate in the winter?
Most of the year, yes. Frozen ground and snow slow production, and concrete pours and some inspections have weather limits, but site clearing, trenching, and foundation work continue through much of the winter. Because the spring and summer schedule fills early, winter is often the fastest way to get a project started.
Do you work with builders and general contractors?
Yes. A large share of our work is for custom and production home builders, commercial contractors, and developers across Central Oregon. We coordinate with your schedule and your other trades, and we also work directly with homeowners who are managing their own build or improvement.
Will you haul away the spoils?
Yes. We run our own dump trucks, so excess dirt, rock, stumps, and debris leave on our schedule, not a third party's. Where it makes sense we reuse clean spoils on site for fill or berms to save you the hauling cost, and we can deliver base rock, fill, and topsoil on the same trips.
