Engineered Base, Liner, and Edge Protection

Cinder, sand, and fractured basalt will not hold water. We over‑excavate, build a clean bedded base, install and seam heavy‑duty liner, and protect the edges and inlet so livestock, equipment, and UV don’t take the pond out five years in.

Koi Ponds & Ornamental Water Features

A koi pond has to keep fish alive through 95° July afternoons and a January freeze. That comes down to depth, turnover, and filtration — not decoration. We build koi ponds at least three to four feet deep so there’s a stable thermal layer and a zone below the ice, size the pump for full water turnover, and install mechanical and biological filtration you can actually service without draining the pond.

Our Pond Installation Process

1. Site Walk and Design

We look at your soils, grade, water source, power availability, equipment access, and sight lines, then lay out shape, depth, and volume. You get a written scope and quote before we start.

2. Permitting and Utility Locates

We identify whether your project triggers Oregon Water Resources Department reservoir or water‑right requirements, handle locates, and coordinate with the county so the pond is built right the first time.

3. Excavation and Shaping

Our own excavation crews and equipment dig the basin, cut the shelves and depth zones, and shape the slopes. Spoils get placed as berms or hauled out with our material handling trucks — no third‑party coordination.

4. Base Prep and Liner Installation

We remove sharp rock, place bedding sand or underlayment, then install and seam the liner with proper overlap and edge anchoring so the pond holds the level you paid for.

5. Plumbing, Pumps, and Controls

Intakes, returns, bottom drains, and valves get plumbed, then we set the pump package. Our custom pump installs cover everything from small aesthetic circulators up to 15+ horsepower field and pasture applications, including variable speed drives, controllers, and pump start relays matched to the design specification.

6. Rock, Edging, and Finish Grading

Boulder placement, flagstone edging, gravel, planting beds, and final grade — the work that decides whether a pond looks built or looks like it was always there.

7. Fill, Startup, and Walkthrough

Why Central Oregon Ponds Are Different

Building a pond here is not the same as building one in the Willamette Valley, and a contractor who hasn’t worked this ground tends to find that out at your expense.

Cinder, pumice, sand, and fractured basalt drain fast. Almost every pond in this region needs a properly installed liner or engineered seal — there is no “dig it and it’ll hold” out here.

How much does pond installation cost?

It depends on size, depth, equipment access, liner type, and how much rock and plumbing the design calls for. A small backyard bubbling water feature is a fraction of the cost of a lined half‑acre irrigation reservoir. We walk the site, look at your soils and water source, and give you a written quote before any dirt moves.

Do I need a permit or a water right?

It depends on how the pond is filled and used. Ponds that store or divert surface water or groundwater generally fall under Oregon Water Resources Department rules, and a reservoir permit or water right may be required. Ponds filled from an existing permitted source, and small recirculating ornamental features, are usually treated differently. We help you identify which category your project falls into and coordinate with the agencies before construction starts.

How deep should a koi pond be?

In the high desert we generally build koi ponds at least three to four feet deep. That depth holds a stable water temperature through hot summer afternoons and keeps a zone below the ice line in winter so fish can overwinter safely.

Will a pond leak in high desert soils?

Native soils here are often porous cinder, sand, and fractured rock that won’t hold water on their own. That’s why we build on an engineered base with a properly seamed and protected liner, so the pond holds the water level you designed for instead of draining into the ground.

How long does it take to build a pond?

A small backyard water feature is typically a few days on site. A residential koi pond with rock work and filtration usually runs one to three weeks. Large irrigation ponds and agricultural reservoirs depend on excavation volume, liner size, and pump work, and are scheduled after a site walk.

Can you repair or reline an existing pond?

Yes. We repair and reline leaking ponds, rebuild failing edges and spillways, replace undersized or worn out pumps, and add aeration or circulation to ponds with chronic algae and water quality problems.
